Elementary School Newsletter - January 31st, 2022

Tuesday marks the first day of Black History Month. We will be celebrating this month in the classrooms and throughout the building. This month is a celebration of those who've impacted not just the country but the world with their activism and achievements. In the US, the month-long spotlight during February is an opportunity for people to engage with Black histories, go beyond discussions of racism and slavery, and highlight Black leaders and accomplishments. I found this linked article user friendly and I invite you to check it out.

Our amazing librarian, Vera Ramsey, has shared a February Choice Board. This includes activities for Black History Month along with other February favorite activities. There are activities for a range of all ages. This choice board was created by Shannon McClintock Miller.

As educators, we continuously are learners ourselves. I have joined with a group of colleagues in a book study of Start Here, Start Now by Liz Kleinrock. We meet every other week to discuss what we have read, what we have learned, and what we plan on doing for our building.

Winter Olympics: This week, the Elementary School is gearing up for the Winter Olympics. We have themes every day where the students and staff can dress up to celebrate the anticipation of the games that start at the end of this week. Go USA!

Weather alert: Please keep an eye on the weather this month. We are expected to get inclement weather. We will notify families as we have done in the past with all calls but also keep an eye on the news stations for any announcements. Also, be mindful of what you send your kids to school with as it relates to the weather. Coats, hats, gloves, and boots are all great for low temperatures and messy conditions.

Jump on board with Kids Heart Challenge! PCS is invited to be a proud partner with the American Heart Association. Please see the attached flyer.

February upcoming dates:

  • February 1st: Start of Black History Month

  • February 17th: Earthquake Drill at 9:15am

  • February 18th: PD Day for staff, No School for Students

  • February 21st: President's Day: No School
